EXCERPT
"Where am
I?" Callie whimpered as she shifted on the sheets.
Looking to her
left, the blue glow from the monitor cast an eerie shadow into the corner of
the room. It was dark, night.
What had happened
to the day? Was it just one day gone or two? How long had she been lying here?
A nurse entered
the room, confirming the suspicion that she was in a hospital. "How are
you doing this evening sweetie?" the matronly lady chirped as she smoothed
the corners of her patient's bed linens.
"I'm thirsty
and my head aches. What happened? How did I get here?" Callie questioned.
The nurse
continued her task without saying another word. Callie tried to raise her head
from the pillow. Dark images raced through her mind. The faster they moved the
more her head hurt and the less she understood.
She felt cold.
The beep, beep, beep of the monitor was annoying. She closed her eyes to shut
out the noise, to shut it all out.
And then she
remembered.
The evil twisted
look on her assailant’s face and the acrid smell of gunpowder.
